A few days after its official release date, we celebrated the launch of my latest book, Petunia the Perfectionist, at a Minneapolis toy store— Kiddywampus. I’m excited to share the highlights of the party, as a lot of planning went into it, and it truly was FUN and a great success!
We held the party in the back party room of Kiddywampus in Hopkins, MN. This is a great spot to host a gathering, and we’ve been to several birthday parties here over the years (they do a GREAT job, btw!).
I brought all my books — Petunia the Perfectionist, The Only Me, and Stella’s Brave Voice — as I figured some people might want to purchase all three. I gave away stickers, branded coloring sheets (with both my and Kiddywampus’s logos), bookmarks, and individually wrapped Petunia-themed sugar cookies (these were a BIG hit!). We held a prize drawing for all the attendees — one person won a $25 gift card to Kiddywampus, while the other won a signed hardcover of Petunia the Perfectionist. I also had two balloon columns with colors matching Petunia and the book’s cover, an adorable life-sized cutout of Petunia, along with my author banner and branded tablecloth runner.
While attendees came in, I tried to welcome everyone, encouraged them to enter the drawing, and kids colored their Petunia coloring sheets. Once everyone was settled, I introduced myself, the book, and the inspiration behind the book. I asked the guests to raise their hands if they’d ever made a mistake — everyone, including me, had their hands in the air! We talked about the importance of mistake-making — each time we fail or make a mistake, we learn something new and our brains grow!
Next, I read Petunia the Perfectionist, followed by a Q&A, and the prize drawing, and then everyone had the opportunity to purchase the books and have them signed!
It was truly a dream come true for me. This is the first Launch Party I’ve had for any of my books, and I felt that since this was my third book, it was time to go for it. It’s important to celebrate hard work!!
