Today, I had the pleasure of being on Fox9 Good Day to talk about my brand new children’s book, Saturdays with Gramps. See the segment here. This book is incredibly near and dear to my heart as I wrote it following the passing of my mother last summer. I was searching for a children’s book on loss to help my daughters navigate the painful waters of grief, as well as to explain death in a child-friendly way, and I couldn’t find one that resonated. Therefore, I began to write it.
Saturdays with Gramps follows a young boy named Sam and his grandfather (“Gramps”). They have an incredibly special relationship filled with all sorts of loving Saturday traditions, from bird watching to eating Gramps’ famous pancakes (“Grampscakes”) to playing chess, and more.
But as time goes on, and Gramps gets older, his body starts to slow down. Eventually, Gramps dies. Sam is heartbroken. But with his mom’s gentle guidance, he begins to realize that even though Gramps is no longer physically present, the love between them will live on forever. Because, like syrup on pancakes, love sticks around.
Sam finds comfort in continuing the Saturday rituals he and Gramps always enjoyed, and it even makes him feel like Gramps is still there with him.
Watch the Fox9 Segment to learn more about Saturdays with Gramps, and if this resonates with you — or if you know a family who could use a book on grief, loss, and healing, please check it out here.
Saturdays with Gramps is available on my website, MarissaBader.com, wherever books are sold online — and if you’d like your local bookstore or library to stock it, I encourage you to request it!
Sending love and healing (and pancakes!) your way.
~ Marissa
