Sometimes it can feel like the world is heavy—even for our kids.
They hear the news, they sense grown‑ups’ stress, and they notice when people are unkind to one another or when things feel unfair or scary. Kids may even wonder, what can I do to help change things? I’m only one small person.
This question is exactly what inspired my newest picture book, Dash Makes a Splash, and this free printable: Kindness Ripples.
What Is Kindness Ripples?
Kindness Ripples is a super simple, social‑emotional learning (SEL) activity that helps children visualize how one small act of kindness can spread outward, just like ripples in water.
In the activity, children:
- Start with one small act of kindness in the center circle (for example: smiling at someone, including a friend, holding the door, helping a sibling, writing a thank‑you note).
- Then fill in the circles around it to show how that one kind action might lead to other kind actions.
- Reflect on how their choices can influence others in positive ways.
It’s hands‑on and empowering, giving kids a concrete way to understand that their actions matter.
Dash Makes a Splash and Kindness Ripples
In the children’s picture book, Dash Makes a Splash, Dash is a small droplet who believes he’s too little to fit in with the others or make a difference. When his splash creates a ripple that begins to spread, he realizes that he’s more powerful than he ever imagined! Soon, more drops join in, and together, they make a WAVE! The story is meant to teach kids that every wave begins with one tiny drop. No matter how small we may be, we all have value, power, and worth, and when we work together, we can instigate REAL change!
How This Activity Supports Social‑Emotional Learning
Kindness Ripples naturally builds several core SEL skills, including:
- Empathy — thinking about how others feel and how kindness affects them
- Self‑awareness — recognizing that their choices have an impact
- Social awareness — noticing how actions influence others
- Positive decision‑making — choosing kind actions intentionally
It also helps children:
- Feel less powerless when things feel hard
- Build a sense of agency and hope
- Practice kindness in concrete, age‑appropriate ways
